Advice for Teachers on using Software for Mathematics Education & a Summary of some Funding available

Mathematics education software on the Chartwell-Yorke website is extremely useful from Key Stage 3 and 4 upwards. It lets students explore many different examples and approaches than by traditional methods, and visualise - even animate - results in 2D or 3D.

Need someone to come and train you and your staff? Here's a list of trainers and training centres.

This section will be expanded to include more free curriculum support materials for use with the various software packages detailed on this site.

Dynamic interactive geometry: The UK Key Stage 3 Framework specificially recommends the use of dynamic interactive geometry software such as Cabri-Geometry II. Its use is also growing at Key Stage 2 and it has very many uses at KS4 and above also. It can even be used in science and engineering at all levels as a modelling tool (lens, piston, mechanics, counter-current chromatography, the list of applications is vast). The KS3 Framework document is full of Cabri screenshots and recommended activities. A leaflet is available from Chartwell-Yorke which highlights some of these.

Here are some free Cabri resources.

To exchange best practise ideas and resources with other teachers, we recommend you join the (Dynamic/Interactive) Geometry discussion group on the JISCMail system at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk.

Barbara Ball, Professional Officer of the ATM, is available for Cabri training workshops. The fee is payable to the ATM. A one and a half hour workshop is available from £300 plus expenses. Telephone Barbara on 01664 840110 or email barbaraball@atm.org.uk.

Data handling: Fathom is the tool of choice for comprehensive data handling and statistics. Autograph has a wonderful interface and capabilities for exploring single variable statistics and probability. Whilst Fathom and Autograph are self-exploratory tools,

Free Advice on using Derive 5. Here you'll find the first two chapters of the book "Introduction to Derive 5" in PDF format, readable with the freely available Adobe Acrobat PDF reader. Derive's strengths are the simplicity of its interface and the accuracy and comprehensiveness of its symbolic maths capabilities. A wide range of textbooks support the use of Derive at college and university level. (It is used at Key Stage 3 and above throughout Europe and the USA, but mainly at KS4, 6th Form, College and University level.)

To exchange best practise ideas and resources with other teachers, we recommend you join the Derive discussion group on the JISCMail system at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk and the Derive User Group.

Free training resources for using Autograph in education are here. Autograph has a wide range of uses from Key Stage 3 (year 9) upto university level. Just some of these are summarised in a four page leaflet available from Chartwell-Yorke.

To communicate mathematical ideas neatly, quickly and attractively in a wide range of formats, we recommend you get MathType 6. You and your colleagues will easily create exam and test papers, journal articles, maths on your website or intranet. Students and staff can communicate mathematical ideas clearly and unambiguously with its assistance.

Ask for our free demo CD-ROM of the program of your choice, or download from this website.

Please visit the books section too, since there are many books which could help you to avoid reinventing the wheel. Stand on the shoulders of giants to get the best out of Excel, Derive, Cabri and other maths ICT.
